Most community growth advice fails for one reason: it treats your community like a content problem. But growth is usually a system problem.

When things feel stuck, it’s rarely “do more”. It’s almost always one weak link in the chain, and everything upstream is working overtime to compensate.

So here’s a tool I use in workshops (and for my own resets):

A one-page Community Growth Flywheel Tune-up worksheet that helps you:

  • spot what’s actually wobbling (not what’s loudest),

  • pick the one step to fix first,

  • and leave with one experiment to run this week (with one metric).

30 minutes. One experiment. One metric.

What is a “community growth flywheel”?

A flywheel is just a loop where each step makes the next step easier.

For community-led growth, the steps usually look like this:

  • Visibility (community → marketing)

  • Promise (who it’s for + transformation)

  • Onboarding (identity + first action)

  • Early win (proof in the first 14 days)

  • Contribution (member-to-member value)

  • Advocacy (members bring members)

    The Community Growth Flywheel

If one of those is shaky, growth becomes exhausting. If two are missing, you’ll feel like you’re “doing everything” and still not moving.

What you’ll get from the worksheet

This worksheet is designed to be filled in as you listen / learn / reflect — not as a homework assignment you’ll avoid.

Inside, you’ll:

  • define your community in one line (including the “not for” line most people skip),

  • pick your weakest growth lever (Attention, Trust, Retention, Referrals),

  • audit each flywheel step (Strong / Shaky / Missing),

  • choose the one step to fix first (with a clear reason),

  • design one experiment for the week,

  • and commit to one metric you’ll actually track.

Rule: one system, one metric, one week. Don’t rebuild the whole community — strengthen one step.

Who this is for (and who it’s not)

This is for you if:

  • you’re building a community-led brand and want a clear next move,

  • you’re posting/hosting/creating… but growth feels messy,

  • you want a practical audit, not a “more content” pep talk.

This isn’t for you if:

  • you want a big strategy overhaul today,

  • you’re looking for hacks instead of a repeatable system.
